The Comedy Studio announces 2017 Comics in Residence

Boston’s iconic comedy club, The Comedy Studio, has announced today its twelve Comics in Residence for 2017. Every month, The Comedy Studio features one comic, each month, on every show. It’s been a longstanding honor for local comedians who’ve managed to be granted the designation.

Your Comics in Residence for 2017 include comedians Xazmin Garza, Mike Dorval, GeorgeCiveris, Mark Gallagher, Kwasi Mensah, Arty P., Srilatha Rajamani, TimMcIntire, Josh Day, Casey Crawford, Drew Dunn and Kate Procyshyn. Join us in congratulating these talented funny folk, and be sure to catch each one’s performances throughout next year.

The Comedy Studio in Harvard Square has cemented its reputation as the area's top laugh lab. It's also earned a solid reputation among industry heavyweights as a "must-visit" club for anyone seeking cutting-edge performers or writers for future television projects. The Comedy Studio - no better breeding ground around.
The Comedy Studio was formed when a bunch of comedians looked around the industry and thought, "We could add a new twist to this". Sometimes that means new talent, sometime its veterans pushing their boundaries. The Comedy Studio assumes more from the audience, and they demand more from themselves. The casual, open, atmosphere of the Studio is the place where fresh talent is discovered and where national headliners come to try out their new material and polish up the old.

The Comedy Studio is located at the top of the Hong Kong Restaurant in Harvard Square and is open Tuesday thru Sunday. Ticket prices are $10 on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays are $15. All shows begin at 8:00 pm. For more information, call 617-661-6507 or contact The Comedy Studio via email

BCS Round-Up, September 26th - October 1st

Summer is dead and buried, but that doesn't mean the fun has to stop - and in Boston Comedy style, it never does. Here's a quick round up of comedy happenings in and around Boston this week to help ease you into fall.

  1. Shake off your case of the Mondays with a free show at McGreevys Boston hosted by Luke Touma and Brian Higginbottom. This week's show features Nick Lavallee, Jim Whitman, Jiayong Li, J Smitty, Mike Roy Whitman and Zenobia Del Mar.
  2. Also tonight, don't miss the Women in Comedy Festival as they present "Wild Memory Nation" at Arsenal Center for Arts in Watertown, featuring Christa Weiss, Laura Merli, Laura Severse, Kenice Mobley, Emily Ruskowski, Danielle Cromartie, Tooky Kavanagh, Laura Clark and Kate Procyshyn, with host Danielle Adnruskiwec.
  3. LaughBoston helps you start your weekend early on Wednesday, September 28th with "Boston Scally Co. Comedy Show: Real Boston, Real Funny", presented by Boston Scally Co. and Dirty Water Media at 8:00 pm. Catch Boston's comedic heavyweights Dave Russo (Dirty Water TV, NESN's "Comedy All-Stars", Comics Come Home), Tony V (The Heat, The Town, State and Main) and Will Noonan (host of the popular podcast "High Pathetically with Will Noonan". Even better? LaughBoston is offering a two-for-one ticket deal when you use code BSC21 at checkout.
  4. If you're in the Worcester area, Addicted to Laughter holds an amazing showcase on Wednesday for National Recovery Month at the Everyday Miracles Peer Recovery Center (25 Pleasant Street, Worcester). This is a free (yes, free) show including the hilarious comedic talent of Shaun Connolly, Xazmin Garza, Dana Jay Bein, Jack Burke, Al Park, Mike Dorval and host Eric Taylor. Check out this 8:00 pm show and help celebrate those in recovery.
  5. On Thursday, September 29th, Boston's favorite comedians take over with two exciting shows that take stand-up a bit further.  "Netflix & Chill: A Dating Game Comedy Show" takes place at 7:00 pm at The Rockwell (255 Elm Street, Somerville, formerly the Davis Square Theatre), hosted by Scott Oddo. "Netflix & Chill" is a dating game show where contestants play crazy games and challenges to find out who is most compatible couple. Be in the audience and be on the show! The games are loosely based on Netflix shows like, Daredevil, Fuller Mouth and Grace & Franks.Who knows what you’ll see: Netflix and lip syncing? Netflix and blind egg toss? Netflix and karaoke? And if a match is found, maybe it will lead to Netflix and Chill. There's also stand-up comedy and surprise guests mixed in, including Gary Petersen, voted Best Comedian in Boston. Check out some clips from past shows and come see why people are calling this the most fun new show of the year!
  6. Stick around The Rockwell for Boston's favorite comedy contest, Roast Battle X, presented by the Boston Comedy Festival. This offering of Boston's version of Roast Battle, hosted by Matt Kona, returns with comedians battling it out to prove who's got the best burn. Thursday's Roast Battle will feature epic battles such as Tyrone Jones vs Angela Sawyer, Jordan Handren Seavey vs Shaun Connolly, Spanky Fournier vs CJ Browne, Christa Weiss vs Mike O'Brien, and Jo Galvin vs Nick O'Connor. Roast Battle began at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles by co-creators Brian Moses and Rell Battle and has expanded to comedy festivals and new venues around the country.
It's a no-holds-barred display of verbal violence in which comedians go at each other one at a time, for three rounds with guest judges deciding who is the victor. It's been packing The Belly Room in LA on a weekly basis since 2013 and for the last few months at New York Comedy Club. After a successful debut in November at The Boston Comedy Festival and a jammed show in January, Roast Battle Returns once again to Davis Square for a truly unique one night only spectacle. Tickets are $15 and doors open at 9:00 for this fan-favorite event.
  7. From Thursday to Saturday, LaughBoston is proud to present Richard Lewis. Perhaps Mel Brooks put it best when he said,"Richard Lewis may just be the Franz Kafka of modern day comedy."  Lewis has taken his lifelong therapy fodder and carved it into a commanding, compelling art form. His early career as a standup brought him to the top of his ranks. Over time and through a variety of mediums, he broadened his exposure and more and more came on board to appreciate his brilliantly warped world. The NY Times said, “This renowned comedian, often considered to be the heir to Lenny Bruce, is a master of long form storytelling who turns his endless neurotic energy into brilliant comedy.” Comedy Central has recognized Mr. Lewis as one of the top 50 stand-up comedians of all time and he was charted on GQ Magazine's list of the '20th Century's Most Influential Humorists'. In December of 1989, Lewis achieved a very personal goal...he performed at Carnegie Hall to a standing room only audience. Lewis performs an 8:00 pm show on Thursday, September 29th, and shows at 7:30 pm and 10:00 pm on Friday, September 30th and Saturday, October 1st. Tickets are on sale now and are sure to go fast.
  8. Round out your weekend in true Boston style with the return of one of Boston's favorite hometown comedy heroes, Gary Gulman, as he headlines The Wilbur on Saturday, October 1st at 7:00 pm. Originally from Boston, Gulman has been a scholarship college football player, an accountant, a barista, a doorman, a waiter and a high school teacher. Now he is one of the most popular touring comics and one of only a handful of comedians to perform on every single late night comedy program. “Gary will be the next giant ex-Bostonian comic to break huge, CK, Burr, Gulman: You heard it here first” raved the Village Voice. He’s made three TV specials, and three albums, and just marked his 20-year anniversary in stand-up with the “It’s About Time Tour,” selling out theaters throughout the country. It’s no wonder the New York Times wrote “Gary is finally being recognized as one of the country’s strongest comedians.” Tickets are $27 and can be purchased at The Wilbur box office.
There you have it, folks - eight awesome options to help make your week a bit easier (and funnier). And remember, laughter is good for the abs, so get off the couch and catch a show!
